Writing Tutorials and Grammar Series

“Grammar should not be taught as a set of dry rules to be memorized.  Grammar is a vital toolbox that can help writers at any level gain confidence and clarity in their written communication.  I can open that toolbox for you.” --- Martha C. Carpentier, Ph.D.

Refresh your knowledge of grammar, expand your editing and revision skills, and gain more confidence in your ability to write persuasively with two courses designed for anyone who wishes to communicate more effectively in writing. Our Writing Tutorials and Grammar Workshops are taught by Dr. Martha C. Carpentier, a full professor at Seton Hall University. An accomplished author of several books and faculty member, Dr. Carpentier has been teaching English for more than 30 years.

Prerequisites

  • Students are required to submit 1 to 3 writing samples by email to [email protected] prior to the start of the program.
  • Students are asked to bring their laptop or tablet to their tutorial session or workshop.

Schedule

Writing Tutorials

One hour sessions on the following dates: 8/18, 8/25, 9/29, 10/13, 11/3

Each student will meet exclusively for an hour one-on-one tutorial with Professor Carpentier, who will help you assess your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, then introduce you to the practical strategies you need to edit and revise your writing successfully. Focusing in-depth on your writing and practicing the tools of sentence and paragraph development will help make your writing more effective.

Grammar Workshops

Saturdays, 11/18 and 12/2 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Students will meet for two 6-hour sessions in a group of 5 to 12 students with Professor Carpentier for an intensive grammar review (day one) followed by peer critique and writing practice (day 2). Working in a group setting allows us to see that most writing problems are not unique, and that good writing is not a matter of talent, but of practice and revision. Gaining confidence in your grammar usage and editing skills will help make your writing more effective.
