Student Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with a B.A. in Art, Design and Interactive Multimedia will:

  • submit a portfolio that demonstrates proficiency in a range of skills appropriate to their field.
  • participate in an organized public event such as the Art, Design and Interactive Media Portfolio Review and/or the annual Walsh Library Gallery Art and Design Exhibition.
     

Graphic Design and Advertising Track

Foundational Skills

  1. ability to execute technical, aesthetic, and conceptual decisions based on an understanding of art and design principles
  2. skill in the use of drawing media and the ability to develop storyboards with imagery and narrative

Communication Skills

  1. ability to develop effective messages for divergent audiences
  2. ability to solve client directed assignments that integrate imagery and typography

Digital Skills

  1. mastery of 2D software programs including applications such as illustration, photography, print and web authoring

Production/Hand Skills

  1. ability to construct professional pieces including three-dimensional packages and multi-page books

Conceptual Skills

  1. ability to create original images (artwork) to be used in design projects (i.e. staging of a photo shoot, digital painting, computer illustration, 3D modeling)
  2. ability to solve multifaceted design problems through the application of design concepts and theories

Analytical Skills

  1. ability to analyze and understand works of art, drawing on knowledge of the historical and cultural context
  2. ability to evaluate work in their field, including their own work, using professional terminology

Professional Skills

  1. presentation of an effective professional portfolio displaying rigorous and consistent attention to detail that is suitable for career applications in the art/design industries or for admittance into competitive graduate programs in the arts
  2. ability to communicate effectively as professional artists/designers and connect with their intended audience using visual, oral, and written presentation skills relevant to their field

Interactive Multimedia Track

Foundational Skills

  1. ability to execute technical, aesthetic, and conceptual decisions based on an understanding of art and design principles
  2. skill in the use of drawing media and the ability to develop storyboards with imagery and narrative

Communication Skills

  1. ability to develop effective messages for divergent audiences
  2. ability to solve client directed assignments that integrate multimedia with creative strategy

Digital Skills

  1. mastery of 2D and 3D software programs including applications such as modeling, animation, illustration, video, sound, photography, print and web authoring
  2. ability to integrate multimedia into time based presentations and deliver them effectively through mobile and Internet web services

Conceptual Skills

  1. ability to demonstrate design thinking by applying experimental techniques and processes in the creation of ideas
  2. ability to create original images, video footage and sound assets and synchronize them into interactive and/or multimedia projects

Analytical Skills

  1. ability to analyze and understand works of art/design drawing on knowledge of the historical and cultural context
  2. ability to evaluate work in their field, including their own work, using professional terminology
