89.5 FM WSOU Hosts 2024 Super Tuesday Coverage

Vote 2024 ButtonsOn March 5, 89.5 FM WSOU’s award-winning news department held their annual election night coverage show for Super Tuesday. The program started at 8 p.m. and ran until 11:30 p.m. when most of the states closed their polls and primary races were called.

During the broadcast, newscasters discussed the biggest storylines of the upcoming presidential election and reacted to the results of the primaries. They discussed a variety of topics including Donald Trump's opponents, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and the last three years under President Joe Biden.

This year’s Super Tuesday Election Night Coverage team included visual and sound media students Liam Harding (junior, East Brunswick, N.J.), Ryan Henry (senior, Bensalem, Pa.), Ryan Johnston (senior, Newark, Del.), Joseph Morales (sophomore, Manalapan, N.J.), and Jorge Rivera (junior, Springfield, N.J.); sports media students Anthony Collins (freshman, Madison, N.J.) and Jackson Shank (junior, Kansas City, Kan.); journalism student Kayla Fonseca (senior, Newark, N.J.) and biology student Dovid Holtzman (junior, Clifton, N.J.).

"Working to put together the program covering Super Tuesday was fantastic," Rivera said. "There’s nothing like bringing news to our listeners live in the moment. We were met with the challenge of covering a broad range of subject while bringing tailored insight into what was unfolding in elections that night. I had the opportunity to work with a great team!"

In May 2022, WSOU won a New York Press Club award for best “Political Coverage NYC Metro – Radio" for their coverage of the New Jersey gubernatorial and New York City mayoral elections on November 2, 2021.

“Working on the Election Night Special with WSOU News was a chance for me to relate my passion for politics with my love for radio," Holtzman said. "Together with news director Ryan Henry and an excellent student team, I was privileged to be on the airwaves as election results came in and help break them down for our audience. Year by year, WSOU News is establishing its name in the Metropolitan press for election night coverage and I am glad to be a part of its important work.”

If you missed out on their coverage, the entire broadcast is posted on the WSOU News YouTube channel and on all podcasting platforms under WSOU: Pirate News Desk. Each individual segment is uploaded onto YouTube as well.

"I am just so proud to see WSOU's news department actively participating in these conversations that are part of history," Christopher Aurilio, M.A. who serves as CHDCM’s director of production and facilities. "Not only was the Super Tuesday coverage an amazing precedent for what we can do for our media students, but also a showcase of what they are capable of as broadcast professionals. I can't wait until November!"
